THE DRIVE with Alan Taylor | #335

It’s time to talk cars and we catch up with some of our favorites from the automotive industry. We begin the show with automotive journalist, BJ Killeen, who explains Mark Reuss’ recent crash in a Pace car at the Detroit Grand Prix. The Executive Vice President of Global Product Development wrecked a $120,000 2019 Corvette ZR1 when he lost control around a tight left-hand turn. He didn’t suffer any major injuries but we are sure this is something that will go down in automotive history. Shifting gears, Hollywood car consultant, Josh Hancock of JoshCAR, is back and brings us the latest from the star-studded automotive scene. He recently helped NBC bring in a display of Ferraris for the Magnum P.I. reboot upfronts, including the original 1982 Ferrari 308 GTS and a 2018 Ferrari 488. Josh raves about how fun it was to drive the 2018 and shares that many people were taking their picture with these iconic cars at the display. He also tells us that FCA has released their five year plan and they have basically said that they’re discontinuing Chrysler cars. It will be interesting to see what the future will be for FCA’s other brands. Alan and Josh then get into a fun debate about the latest pony car wars and decide which ones are their favorites. Next, Autotrader’s Executive Editor, Brian Moody, shares their list of “12 Fuel Sippers to Fight Rising Gas Prices” for 2018. The Chevy Bolt, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Honda Kona are just a few on the list of cars that could save you some dollars on fuel. Brian talks about some rare rides that are for sale on Autotrader and ponders how much some of these are actually worth. Brian then lists Autotrader’s best certified pre-owned vehicle manufacturers which include Lexus and Porsche. He and Alan also review the 2019 Subaru Ascent which can seat up to eight people and still has all the great Subaru characteristics. Then, we chat with the ever wild Dennis Collins who updates us on the latest happenings at Collins Bros Jeep. Every Friday morning, he does a Coffee Walk where viewers can follow him around the shop and see the projects they’re putting their hard work into. He also raves about an up-fit they just did to his Jeep Trackhawk that took it up to about 805-HP. Lastly, Alan gives us an update on Barrett-Jackson Northeast at the Mohegan Sun which will take place June 20-23rd. Join us now for the latest and greatest in automotive news!

[00:00:00] Rare Car Investments

The time has come – the last production model of the Dodge Demon and Viper are going to be sold at Barrett-Jackson Northeast at the Mohegan Sun in June. This strikes up a conversation between automotive journalist, BJ Killeen, and Alan about rare car investments. They are excited to see how much these beasts will go for at the auction and will be curious to know what drew the purchasers to make the investment. Alan explains that he is happy he bought his Demon because the value instantly increased when Dodge chose to discontinue them. Do you have a rare ride that you’re dying to know its worth?

[00:05:34] Mark Reuss Crashes Corvette

Recently, at the Detroit Grand Prix General Motor’s Executive Vice President of Global Product Development, Mark Reuss, lost control of a $120,000 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. The crash on a tight left-hand turn luckily left Mark with minor injuries but some embarrassment may linger. Many find it shocking that he wrecked the car in the first place because he has a couple of racing licenses and has driven on that track many times. They are not sure how fast he was going, but judging by the Indy cars that were cruising around him, he had to have been going at least 80-mph. As soon as they realized Mark was okay, they had a backup pace car ready to hit the track in its place. Mark publicly thanked all his engineers for the safety that he considers the best in the world. Learn more about this intense day at the track.

[00:12:31] Magnum P.I. Ferrari Display

Hollywood Car Consultant, Josh Hancock of JoshCAR, explains the recent display he helped create for NBC’s upfronts to fund their reboot of Magnum P.I. He was able to get his hands on the original 1982 Ferrari 305 GTS from the Petersen Automotive Museum. He also brought in a 2018 Ferrari 488 and explains that there was no shortage of people stopping to take their pictures with these beautiful cars. Josh tells us it was a really fun experience driving the 2018 Ferrari, and it was interesting to see how it drove compared to the older models. Get ready to fall in love with Ferraris again.

[00:19:52] FCA’s Five Year Plan

FCA just revealed their five-year plan and some of their decisions are not that surprising. Josh Hancock of JoshCAR tells us they have announced they’ll be discontinuing all Chrysler cars; this includes the Chrysler 300.  We haven’t heard what will happen with the other car brands under the FCA parent company. This may be a good decision for them because many cars are going to the SUV or Crossover platform. Josh, then, excitedly announces that Alfa Romeo has revealed the GTV which looks similar to a two-door Giulia but has a nicer sculpt to the design and boasts 600-HP. Also, Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, apparently left the door open for a possible re-introduction of the Dodge Viper. It will be exciting to see what’s in store for all the other brands.

[00:28:07] Pony Car Wars

There are so many amazing performance cars hitting the road and it is getting more difficult to decide which one is winning the race. Hollywood Car Consultant, Josh Hancock of JoshCAR, shares that the Mustang has been his number one car since he was very young, but it’s his number two car that has changed. He’s always had a soft spot for the Chevrolet Camaro but the newest design has changed his mind, with its short windshield and limited visibility. The car that has now claimed the second spot in his heart is none other than the Dodge Challenger, and Josh explains that this is because he really admires how it’s really stayed true to its heritage design. However, Alan believes that because the Challenger is such an old platform, Dodge really owes us something new. Is there a pony car that’s caught your eye over the rest?

[00:35:53] 12 Fuel Sippers for 2018

It’s time to buy a new car and with the evolution of environmental consciousness, many are leaning towards high fuel efficiency. Brian Moody, Executive Editor of Autotrader, gives his a list of the best fuel sippers for 2018. The Chevrolet Bolt, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Kona, and the Honda Insight are just a few of the earth-friendly rides at the top of the list. Some of these machines have been engineered to get up to 55-mpg and others are even all-electric and their range is growing with every new model. Brian also explains that it’s important to be aware of the fact that these brand new cars may not save you money, but if you’re already in the market for a new car then it’s not a bad idea to look in the direction of these hybrids or electrics. Are you interested in your car consuming less fuel?

[00:42:14] Rare Cars on Autotrader

Autotrader is one of the leading places for those who are looking to buy or sell a car and sometimes you can find some pretty interesting things on there. Autotrader’s Brian Moody joins us to inquire about the value of some of these rare rides. He tells us there was recently a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro SS listed with 37 miles on it and they had it priced at $42,000. The question – is there someone out there that would buy something like this for that price just because of the low miles? The reason people buy these rare cars is that they see it as a collectible piece, and chances are there is someone out there who holds that car in high regard, possibly for a nostalgic purpose. What is your dream car?

[00:48:13] Best Certified Pre-Owned Rides

The best way to purchase a used car is to look for a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle and Brian Moody of Autotrader tells us why. A CPO gives the buyer extra assurance because they come with a warranty through the dealer that will cover a certain amount, even on a pre-owned car. Brian raves about the best brands with quality CPO programs and explains that some companies really stand behind their cars. The top of the list is Lexus and they provide up to six years of total coverage from the date the car was first sold, and they also have included unlimited mileage during that time. Brian also tells us that Porsche has a really great program as well. If you’re looking for a used car, make sure you get one that will have your back!

[00:54:45] 2019 Subaru Ascent

Love – it’s what makes a Subaru a Subaru. Alan and Executive Editor of Autotrader, Brian Moody, just had the opportunity to drive the Subaru Ascent on the beach in Oregon. The Ascent is a three-row car, unlike anything they’ve had before, and they managed to give it the classic Subaru characteristics that we know and love. The base price starts at $31,995 and it comes with tri-zone automatic climate control, 19 cup holders, four or more USB ports, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It’s also equipped with the amazing safety features that make Subarus even more desirable such as Subaru EyeSight, automatic pre-collision braking, adaptive pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, and more. The Ascent also has room for up to eight passengers and they even give you the option of choosing four captain’s chairs. This adventure mobile comes with Subaru’s standard symmetrical AWD and can achieve 27-MPG on the highway and has a 19-gallon fuel tank with a 500-mile fuel up range. This is just a drop in the bucket of all the amenities this amazing car has. Discover more about the Subaru Ascent now.

[01:02:05] Friday Coffee Walks

Dennis Collins is always going, going, going and the projects they have going on at Collins Mountain Jeep are never-ending. Dennis has started doing Friday morning coffee walks where he takes you through the shop and explains what they are working on and the new things coming off the line. This is exciting because viewers get to feast their eyes on some of their wild builds for customers and their personal projects. He tells us he recently found a ’66 Jeep Super Wagoneer and only 36 prototypes were made that were ordered to be crushed. They happened to find #7 through a local Jeep enthusiast and at this time the only other one known is #6, hiding in a long-time private collection. They also just uncovered, from the side of a neighbor’s house, a ’65 912 Porsche and this beautiful machine is so significant because there were only six made. Get your classic car fix now with Collins Bros Jeep.

[01:10:44] 805-HP Jeep Trackhawk

When it comes to horsepower, Dennis Collins of Collins Bros Jeep knows what he’s doing. He sounds off about the 2018 Jeep Trackhawk that he’s been working on and after remapping the PCM and ECM, changing the pulleys and crank, they’ve managed to get up to 805-HP pushing through the rear wheels. Dennis admits that he’s not yet run the Trackhawk against his 2018 Dodge Demon because he fears the Trackhawk may beat the Demon. Changing gears, he also updates us on the new kits from Black Mountain Jeep such as the Stage 1, 2, and 3 which include upgraded tires, bumpers and lights depending on what you are in the market for. Catch the latest from Dennis Collins now.
