As an expectant mother, I am over the moon with the purchase of my 2016 Subaru Forester. Subaru’s reputation for safety is unmatched, and this was the most important box on my list of requirements for a new vehicle. Even though it’s already a couple of model years old, this compact SUV is still impressing me. The symmetrical all-wheel drive won me over from the beginning, as I had previously owned a Subaru that delivered me safely through countless snow storms and slick, rainy roads. Throughout the years, Subaru has continued to manufacture safe vehicles by consistently working to integrate new technology, and Subaru EyeSight continues this trend.
I recently took a 400-mile trip along the highways of Oregon, and boy was it a busy weekend! A mix of sluggish semi-trucks and zooming cars is enough to make anyone anxious, but then I started to relax. For the first time since I’ve owned my Forester, I turned on cruise control and let the car do the work for me. My experience with cruise control up to this point had not been the best; I had to constantly be ready to tap the brake and gas, and resume the settings after I passed the slow-moving vehicles I crept up on. Subaru EyeSight took the tediousness out of cruise control; as soon as I got close to a truck the cameras took notice and signaled the car to slow down period. Then, I flicked the blinker, not touching the gas or brake once, and switched lanes. After that, Subaru EyeSight’s sensors were able to detect the open road in front of me, and the compact SUV sped back up to the desired speed.
Subaru EyeSight monitors traffic movement, optimizes cruise control, and has a lane departure warning. The Forester can even fully brake itself with its Pre-Collision Braking and help avoid a frontal impact or at least make it less severe. Hidden near the rearview mirror, dual color cameras are able to scan the road in front and alert you to any potential dangers. Adaptive cruise control helps the Subaru Forester navigate busy roads and maintain a safe flow in traffic. The sensors track the white line on the road and notify you if you begin to swerve or lane departure is detected. These features give drivers the extra security they need to feel safe driving on busy roads with the precious cargo of life on board.
I could rave about Subaru EyeSite for hours, but I do have a word of caution for other users of this system: don’t become overly reliant. Driving home over treacherous mountain passes after a long weekend, I realized I needed a bit more control. I turned off my cruise control to maneuver around those bends and prepare for extremely slow vehicles in front of me. Occasionally, I found myself forgetting that I was once again in charge of regulating the throttle as I wound through traffic! Just make sure you’re awake, aware, and ready to control your ride in tricky situations, as these systems are advanced, but not autonomous. Remember, Subaru gives you the option to turn each of these features off. If you find yourself becoming dangerously reliant on a certain feature, disable it for the safety of yourself and those around you.
For me, I know I will be keeping EyeSight on every time I take a long trip because that extra assurance to keep my family safe is well worth it. While some new technology may take some getting used to, Subaru has made it simple and extremely easy to use. Subaru EyeSight is now available on many 2018 models and some earlier models as well. Always remember, safe driving assistance systems are a great boon, but you are still the pilot in control, stay alert on the road!
