THE DRIVE with Alan Taylor | Episode #344

We’re back in the saddle for another car-crazy week of THE DRIVE with Alan Taylor. Kicking off the show, Joe Martin, host of popular Velocity reality television series, “Iron Resurrection”, says he keeps ‘fake drama’ clear of his show. We learn how Joe and crew will be keeping it real in the latest season and get a preview of two projects in the queue, a 1971 Chevrolet C10 and 1950 Mercury. Plus, we find out how Joe went from tinkering on bicycles in Dallas, to becoming the master car restorer in charge of Martin Bros Customs. Next up, Shift Industries Co-CEO, Toby Russell, fills us in on how they’re revolutionizing the way we buy and sell cars with their easy-to-use, augmented marketplace. Shift not only offers an exclusive concierge service to pick up and deliver vehicles, they’re making it simple for consumers to get a fair deal on their dream car with instant, location-specific pricing data. Toby explains how a recent partnership with Lithia Motors will expand the effectiveness of their price predicting algorithm. Shifting gears, freelance automotive journalist, George Kennedy III, has found the east coast alternative to Monterey Car Week. Spice up a future Labor Day weekend with the historic races at Lime Rock Park. Two days of thrilling races feature a wide variety of cars like the Fiat 124, BMW 3.0 CSL, and Chevrolet Corvette Stingrays. A Bugatti-specific event will showcase a fleet of 1920s and 1930s Bugatti’s in an all-out race to the finish leading up to a concours along the edges of the track. Also, George fills us in on a storytelling event he emceed, “Motormouth” that focuses on the growth of Boston car culture. Changing lanes, Dennis Collins of Collins Bros Jeep gives a heartfelt farewell to Burt Reynolds, a man who enriched many lives with his great movies. Using his custom Hellcat Jeep Wrangler JK, Dennis started a “Burnouts for Burt” social media initiative, asking others to share their burnouts in honor of the iconic American actor. Also, we find out about the 2018 Jeep-turned-truck that Dennis has been working on, and a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette that once served as the Chevrolet Engineering Center’s test car. Up next, Karl Brauer of Kelley Blue Book discusses his decision to sell his original Ford GT in favor of the new 2019 Ford GT (being able to keep his Dodge Demon is an added bonus). Alan shares his thoughts on the 2018 BMW X6 M with Karl – it’s an amazing machine with tons of power and performance. Then, we chat about Rivian, Faraday Future, Elon Musk and more. To close the show, JoshCAR’s Josh Hancock gives his review of the Mustang GT 5.0 10-speed automatic, touches on performance SUVs, and lets us know about a few car-centric movies destined for the silver screen. Dennis gives us the full story of this car’s historic past. Two other cool finds that came through the efforts of his dead or alive initiative are a 1969 Pontiac Firebird Ram Air III 4-speed with matching numbers, and a 1971 NASCAR AMC Javelin. Learn more about these amazing rides.

[00:54:43] Out with the Old GT, In with the New

Are the rumors true? Could Karl Brauer have possibly brought himself to sell his precious, prized 2005 Ford GT? Alas, it is true! Fear not, a new Ford GT is on its way. Kelley Blue Book Executive Publisher, Karl Brauer, fills us in on his decision to sell his most coveted possession in favor of an upgraded version. While his new GT will Sport a liquid blue body, there will be a colorful twist. Karl tells us that Doug Demuro, a prominent YouTube automotive reviewer, is the new owner of his 2005 Ford GT and will be featuring it heavily on his YouTube channel. Alan reflects on his decision to sell his Shelby GT500 Super Snake Convertible – maybe he shouldn’t have done that. Don’t feel bad for Alan, thought, not many of us have a Dodge Viper and a Dodge Demon in our stable. What is your dream car?

[01:02:04] 2018 BMW X6 M – An Amazing Machine

BMW is known for top-notch styling, technology, and performance. Alan recently drove a 2018 BMW X6 M with a sticker price of $120,000 and says, “This is no normal SUV. If you add M to any BMW, it is CRAZY!” This high performing SUV starts at $104,000, and boasts a 0-60 mph of 3.5 seconds. Speaking of performance SUVs, Kelley Blue Book’s Karl Brauer is amazed by the feats modern performance SUVs can achieve. He is scheduled to drive the new Mercedes AMG GT 4-Door Coupe next week in Austin, TX. Preliminary numbers give the AMG GT 63 and AMG GT 63 S a 0-60 of 3.3 and 3.1 seconds, with 577 HP and 630 HP, respectively. Plus, we touch on automotive newcomers, Rivian and Faraday Future, and ponder if the impending wave of autonomous cars could sap the joy of driving from our lives. Lastly, while marijuana is legal in certain states, we wonder if Elon Musk should have refrained from partaking publicly on popular podcast, the “Joe Rogan Experience”.

[01:11:58] Paddle Vs. Pedal

Are you a manual or automatic transmission kind of guy? While JoshCAR Hollywood Car Consultant, Josh Hancock, normally drives a 2017 Mustang GT with 6-speed manual transmission, he recently re-injured his shoulder and is driving a 2018 Mustang GT 5.0 with 10-speed automatic transmission. Developed jointly by GM and Ford, the 10-speed is evidently a very robust transmission, as they’re using it in a wide array of vehicles. Josh shares his experience using a paddle shifter. Although it would probably give him an advantage on the track, Josh will always prefer the feeling of driving a manual transmission. Alan loves the paddles on his automatic Dodge Demon. What do you prefer, paddle or pedal?

[01:18:05] Performance SUVs and New Flicks

Hollywood seems to be on a kick of remaking old classic movies – what’s old is new again. Is it because there are no new ideas left? JoshCAR’s Josh Hancock fills us in on a couple of film franchises that are slated for reinstatement: “Bad Boys” and “Top Gun”. Shifting gears, Alan shares his experience with the aforementioned 2018 BMW X6 M, commenting that the 4.4 liter TwinPower Turbo V8 will knock you back in your seat. Josh is impressed with the abilities of modern performance SUVs, that put most sedans and coupes to shame. Are you ready for new action flicks and powerful SUVs?
