Easter eggs are always a fun nod to our most cherished cultural phenoms. The fun-loving CEO (and ‘business magnet’) of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, meticulously hides Easter eggs into his vehicles, but claims that not all of them have been discovered. Here are the secret Tesla treasures that have been found so far…
The Spy Who Loved Me 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
This one takes inspiration from two sources, James Bond and Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” Hold the Tesla logo for five seconds and enter access code “007” into the input box. Now that you’re Mr. Bond, access the suspension menu. You will notice that the Lotus Esprit from the 1977 James Bond flick, “The Spy Who Loved Me”, will be in place of your Tesla on screen. Now for the best part, you can change your car’s ‘depth’ (in leagues) between the options 0, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000, and your car will raise or lower in response. When you’re done splashing around in this James Bond inspired menu, press and hold the Tesla logo and enter access code “007” again to restore your normal suspension screen.
Psychedelic Cowbell Road
A few of these Easter eggs seem to be mash-ups, and the trend continues with this Mario Kart meets Saturday Night Live reference. Now, you will only have access to this one with a Tesla that has Autopilot installed and activated. Go for a drive, activate the autopilot button four times in quick succession, and behold a rainbow-colored road unfolding before you on your dash while a clip of Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper” plays. Just be careful who’s riding with you when you activate this mode as it could induce seizures!
Wizards in Winter in a Model Xmas Special
Fans of Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Christmas will love this one! Tesla Model X owners will be treated to a dance off and a light show by their electric SUV if they hold the Tesla logo and then enter “holiday” or “ModelXmas” into the text box. First, the Model X’s Falcon Wing doors slowly open as Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Wizards of Winter” begins playing. As the music intensifies, so does the cars dance; front doors open and close, Falcon Wing doors raise and lower, side view mirrors fluctuate back and forth, and headlights flash in patterns in time to the metallic Christmas tune.
The Red Planet
Cars aren’t the only thing Elon Musk is trying to revolutionize. His private space exploration company, SpaceX, has made great progress in developing reusable space entry/return systems. Elon also has an ambition to have people on Mars by 2025. So, it isn’t too surprising to learn that there is a Mars-themed Easter egg embedded into the programming of Tesla cars. It’s simple to access – just hit and hold the Tesla ‘T’ on your infotainment system and enter the code “mars” to change your navigation map into the surface of Mars, and your car into an explorative rover. The “About Your Tesla” screen will also display the proposed SpaceX interplanetary transport system.
Santa’s New Ride
Santa is coming to town, but he’s done away with his sleigh this year for another holiday-themed Easter egg. Hit the voice command button and say “Ho Ho Ho” and turn your Tesla into a veritable winter wonderland, complete with a sleighbound St. Nick, snowfall that comes down harder as you go faster, and snowy roadways (on autopilot mode). When you encounter other cars on the road, they will be represented by reindeer, which will run on your screen when the vehicles around you move. When activated, Chuck Berry’s 1958 classic, “Run Rudolph Run” will play, and your blinkers will play a jingle bell sound effect. If you want a different soundtrack to your winter joyride, say “Ho ho ho not funny” instead, and you will be treated to “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” by Elmo & Patsy. Even if you’re a grinch, this Easter egg is sure to get you in the holiday spirit.
(Elon Musk has mentioned that there was an Easter egg within this Easter egg. Yup, it’s Easter egg inception! Some believe it to be the fact that the Mars Rover in ‘The Red Planet’ Easter egg can be seen sporting a Santa cap and a Christmas present as it traverses the barren Mars landscape. Someone’s gotta deliver those presents to the Martian kids.)
Fostering the Inner Artist in You
If you find some extra down time while sitting in your car (Do not drive and play with this Easter egg!) you can tap the Tesla ‘T’ on your infotainment screen three times to unlock a sketch pad app. Draw a pretty picture, send it off to Elon Musk, and he might provide an artistic critique. It also seemed fitting that a man that adds a sketch pad to the infotainment center of his car would draw a farting unicorn to unveil its existence.
Juice Up The Night
It’s time to charge your Tesla Model S or X, but you’re feeling a little energetic. Maybe you want a dance party, but who can you party with? Why, your Tesla of course! Plug that power wall connector in and click the power button ten times to get a light show. Now just pop on the dance music and get your groove on.
Who Made Your Sweet Ride Possible, Anyway?
Short and simple, this one gives you a look at the team that designed your Tesla, so you can stare longingly and admiringly into their faces. Just tap and hold the lower right hand corner logo in the “About Your Tesla” screen for a picture of the team that worked on your car. It shows different pictures depending on which model you own.
The Ultimate Answer of Everything
Fans of Douglas Adams’ “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” know that the ultimate answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42. Elon Musk knows this as well, and if you enter “42” as the name of your vehicle, it instead changes your vehicle’s identity to “Life, the Universe, and Everything”. You can rest easy knowing this simple truth will be with you wherever you go.
Tesla has recently added an Easter egg menu, in which you can easily access all or most of these fun additions at the touch of a button, but where’s the fun in that?! Do you know any Easter eggs that we haven’t listed? Leave us a comment below.
