[00:00:00] SUVs, Cadillac CT5, BAC Mono at NYIAS
Alan was in New York City all of last week for his appearance on ABC’s Kelly and Ryan for exclusive automotive debuts for their annual Auto Week segments; but he didn’t go to the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS)! Here to help us sort out some of the key displays that we’ve missed from NYIAS is Founder, Editor, and Publisher of Rides and Drives, Harvey Briggs. A score of SUVs, including the Lincoln Corsair, adorned the halls, while sedans like the Cadillac CT5 stood apart from the crowd. The Porsche 911 Speedster was sure to make any Porsche 911 fan smile, but what really stood out to Harvey was the BAC Mono, a single seater, street-legal formula car with a hefty price tag ($300,000!!). Speaking of hefty price tags, Buggati’s latest offering was on display at NYIAS, ringing to the tune of $3,000,000. Tune in for more about Harvey’s favorites from the New York International Auto Show.
[00:06:07] Kia Telluride: Two Thumbs Up
Alan and his wife have been driving a $100,000+ Range Rover and were very impressed; but they had another SUV delivered recently that was just as impressive. You’ve been hearing about it on our show for weeks now: the all new 2020 Kia Telluride. This machine comes fully loaded at $48,000 and has all the bells and you could ask for. Founder, Editor, and Publisher of Rides and Drives, Harvey Briggs, is scheduled to take a ride in the Kia Telluride soon as well, and he couldn’t be more excited. If you’re in the market for a three-row SUV, you will find no greater bang for your buck than the 2020 Kia Telluride.
[00:12:30] Rides and Drives and BMW M5 Competition
Founder, Editor, and Publisher of Rides and Drives, Harvey Briggs, is living the dream doing what he loves: driving cars, going on long road trips, and writing about his experiences. That’s what Rides and Drives is all about, the experience and the joy of driving our favorite vehicles. Speaking of amazing cars, Harvey has been driving the BMW M5 Competition and is having a blast! 617-HP, all-wheel drive, a 0-60 of 2.8 seconds, and a top speed of 189 mph make this beast a 4-door supercar that is a lot of fun on and off the track. Alan compares and contrasts the BMW M5 Competition with his recent test drive of the BMW M2 Competition, saying that the M2 was a great track car, but he would not want out drive it as an everyday car. Tune in to learn more about the BMW Competition series.

[00:27:25] Black Mountain Jeep and Bring A Trailer
If you want the most decked out Jeep imaginable, Collins Bros Jeep and Black Mountain Jeep should be your first (and only) destination. “But what if I live in Canada!?” you may be asking. Thankfully, Owner of Collins Bros. Jeep and Black Mountain Jeep, Dennis Collins, is thinking of you, and recently announced the opening of the first Black Mountain Jeep Canadian location. Looking to the future, we discuss the impending arrival of Dennis’ first Jeep Gladiator, the 1000-HP Hellephant crate engine, and more. Also, we learn about one of Dennis’ favorite online auction sites, BAT (Bring A Trailer), and some auctions he has on there, including a 1966 Ferrari 330 GT. Listen in for more!
[00:35:52] One Lap of America and Rare Barn Finds
When you’re born to race, traveling to and competing on seven tracks in seven days isn’t work, it’s an insanely fun time! Owner of Collins Bros. Jeep and Black Mountain Jeep, Dennis Collins, fills us in on his daughter, Kellsey Collins’ scheduled participation in the One Lap of America endurance race with a brand new, 710-HP, 2019 Stage 3 Roush Mustang. Changing gears, Dennis discusses one of his recent favorite barn finds, and asks listeners to keep an eye out for any rare or unusual European sports cars. [00:42:13] People Still Not That Interested in EVs
Tesla is in the news again and they’re not making money or hitting their projections, but their stock doesn’t see to have taken as hard of a hit as any other company with these problems would expect. Will an increasing number of viable alternatives, like Rivian, bring for a change to the dynamic Tesla has enjoyed so far? Automotive journalist, BJ Killeen, offers her perspective on the Tesla situation and the overall interest in electric vehicles among American autobuyers. Until something better comes along, electric is all we have for low emission cars, but do you think it’s enough?
[00:48:07] Ford, Rivian, and Future of Electric
There is no doubt that Tesla makes an amazing machine, but it’s time for people to stop pretending that there are no alternatives out there. Automotive journalist, BJ Killeen, chats about Ford’s $500 million investment into Rivian, and how this validates the start-up as a worthwhile project. Could Ford be planning to use Rivian technology to power an all-electric Ford F150? This move could be made in response to Ford’s internal decision to cut cars out of their production line (which is where most of their fuel efficient vehicles reside). One of the biggest drawbacks of electric vehicles is the range anxiety and charing time that most EVs face, but with recent advancements, Alan says companies like Rivian have really got something special going on. Are you a fan of Rivian?
[00:54:44] Tesla’s First Quarter Woes
Elon Musk gives us many reasons to bash on him and Tesla, but don’t think that means we don’t realize what fine machines they actually make, or recognize the visionary, entrepreneur that Elon is. Automotive journalist, BJ Killeen, hits us with the facts: Tesla vehicle deliveries are down 31% from last quarter, stocks are down 10%, and Tesla is trying to decide whether Elon should keep holding on to his board seat! Is this the beginning of the end for Tesla?
[01:02:05] Magazines, New York Auto Show, and More
One of the highlights of Alan’s trip to New York, for him, was the Car and Driver and Road and Track hosted dinner party at the Hearst Tower where he got to hang with three generations of the Andretti family. This makes him think about how different of a magazine Car and Driver is these days, and JoshCAR Hollywood Car Consultant, Josh Hancock discusses the role of media in the auto shows and how they’ve been making a transition from print-focused to web-focused. Then, Josh discusses his top picks from the New York International Auto Show, including the Toyota HIghlander, Audi Q3, Lincoln Corsair, and Subaru Outback. The Hyundai Sonata was a real stand-out for Josh, you can’t beat it for $23,000. Tune in for more from NYIAS.
[01:10:35] Hollywood Dream Machines at Petersen
If you’re a long-time fan of THE DRIVE with Alan Taylor, you’re probably familiar with the Petersen Automotive Museum; it’s where we used to broadcast live from! JoshCAR Hollywood Car Consultant, Josh Hancock, has been working with the folks at the Petersen to get automobiles for their brand new display: Hollywood Dream Machines. Head down to see vehicles pulled straight out of your favorite science fiction and fantasy movies and shows. They even have vehicles like the Peacekeeper Vehicles from the Hunger Games that are so large they couldn’t fit in the main building!
[01:18:06] Tesla Bombs While Ford Booms
It seems the big news of the day is Tesla’s failure to perform well in the first quarter of 2019. Executive Publisher of Autotrader, Kelley Blue Book, and Dealer.com, Karl Brauer, says a lot of automotive industry experts have been wondering how long it would take Tesla’s house of cards to crumble, and it seems that time has come. In January, Tesla’s stock was sitting pretty at 347, but today its down to 235! These are troubling times for Tesla, especially as their position in the market becomes less and less unique with the introduction of alternative all-electric companies like Rivian. Speaking of Rivian, they recently reached a deal with Ford that will see them receive a $500 million investment. As Ford’s stock soars, they continue to rock the house. Are you a fan of Rivian or Ford?
